2005 BPW/Raleigh Scholarship Awards
The BPW/Raleigh Scholarship is
named for Lois Frazier and Mary Fox.
- Lois Frazier is a
long-time member and past President of Raleigh BPW. She is Professor
Emeritus at Meredith College where she trained young women for many years as
a faculty member and head of the Business Department. Lois Frazier was at
the monthly meeting at which the scholarship recipients were announced.
- Mary Fox was a long-time
BPW member and served as our District Secretary/Treasurer. She led a
remarkable life as a wife and mother and had a successful career in
insurance services.
The Scholarship Committee
consisted of Claire McCullough, who served as chair, Nina Duval, and Dianna
Wynn. On behalf of the Committee, Dianna Wynn announced this year’s winners of
the Lois Frazier and Mary Fox Scholarship.
- Elizabeth Bartels
graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro with a Bachelor’s in Political Science. One of her references
wrote, “She has an impressive grade point average, is very politically
active and volunteers her time for causes she believes in, and manages to
also have a charming and approachable personality while juggling working,
studying, and volunteering.” Another wrote, “I hope to have more women like
Liz join the legal profession.” Elizabeth is currently attending John
Marshall Law School in Chicago and plans to pursue a career in International
Law. In her application Elizabeth writes, “There is nothing I want more in
life than to find within myself the same energy and focus that will allow me
to be as accomplished as my mother.” Accepting the award on Elizabeth’s
behalf was her mother, Susan Hargrove.
- Genita Raynor
graduated from Wake Technical College with honors. She is currently an
undergraduate at Saint Augustine’s College majoring in Organizational
Communication and maintains a 4.0 GPA. She plans to pursue a Master’s
degree after graduation. She is a member of the Adult Learners Government
Association and participates in the Enrichment Youth Tutoring Program.
Ultimately, she plans to provide training workshops for women, single
parents, and childcare providers. One of her references wrote, “Genita is a
leader among her peers. Her commitment and dedication to return to college
as an adult learner and finish her degree despite other family and life
commitments is most admirable.” Another wrote, “She is a role model for all
women to work hard to achieve your goals.” Genita’s mother, Catherine
Ferrell, was in attendance for the scholarship presentation.
Both of these women exemplify
the BPW ideals of scholastic excellence, community involvement, and potential to
be a leader in their fields. Congratulations to them both.
