BPW/Raleigh Inducts 2010-2011 Officers
President
Lea-Ann Berst BPW/Raleigh Thanks Outgoing President Anita Baxter We at BPW/Raleigh would like to share our heartfelt thanks to Anita Baxter for her executive leadership over this past year. When Anita took over the role as BPW/Raleigh’s President last year, the mission and the legacy of BPW/USA was transitioning to the BPW Foundation. It was an exciting time…a time of confusion… a time of BIG changes. Under Anita’s leadership we have had a successful year highlighted by several advancements in our organizational policy and procedures, excellent speaker programs, an improved student membership policy, and finally – the historic merger between the BPW Triangle and BPW Raleigh local organizations! We at BPW/Raleigh look forward to the coming year working with Anita in her new capacity as councilor to the new Board. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have had Anita Baxter serve as our President this past year. Thank you Anita!
BPW/Raleigh Celebrates Merger with Triangle BPW RALEIGH, NC, April 30, 2010 – We are pleased to announce that the Raleigh and Triangle Business and Professional Women’s organizations have voted to approve a merger effective July 1, 2010. This historic move will assure that the mission of the BPW organization will continue on into its 92nd year; serving the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary area. The Triangle Business and Professional Women’s organization was chartered in 1987; building a proud 23 year legacy of supporting working women and families. Chartered in 1919, the Raleigh Business and Professional Women’s organization will join forces with the Triangle club to obtain political, professional and personal growth for working women on all levels. Together the goal will be to make a significant contribution to the community while benefiting BPW members with educational programs and a variety of networking opportunities. “In the current economic climate it was critical that we unite and consolidate our assets to continue our work and shared vision in a fiscally sound manner,” said BPW/Triangle President Mary Kim. “Together we also have the power in numbers to make a significant contribution to our community,” shared BPW/Raleigh President Anita Baxter. The BPW journey began when the U.S. Government, while mobilizing for World War I, recognized the need for a cohesive group to coordinate identification of women’s available skills and experience. A Women’s War Council, financed through a federal grant, was established by the War Department to organize the resources of professional women. As a result, the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was founded on July 15, 1919 – and soon after in the same year the North Carolina and then Raleigh local organization were formed. Through the years, BPW has been a driving force behind significant national legislation, such as the War Classification Act (1923), the Equal Pay Act (1963), the Civil Rights Act (1964), the Federal Jury Selection and Service Act (1968), the Educational Equity Act (1974), and the Retirement Equity Act (1983). As a 501 (c) (3) research and educational organization, BPW counts among its members working women in all positions including business owners, corporate executives, professionals, and elected officials. Membership in this organization is open to all. Please join BPW/Raleigh on May 25 for the May Member Mingle, a celebration of the BPW/Raleigh and BPW/Triangle merger! Business networking games and BPW-101 are only part of the agenda. A formal installation of BPW officers for the 2010-2011 program year is also planned. Please visit the website at www.bpwraleigh.org to find out more and to register for the event.
