A Message from our President |
|
 |
For those of
you who were involved in preparing a child to go back to
school this fall, you may have noticed that some things
just don’t change. The agency that I direct provides
school supplies for homeless children, and our stock
room shelves are loaded with reassuringly familiar
items: No. 2 yellow pencils (with virgin erasers),
wide-rule notebook paper, Elmer’s glue (granted, now in
stick form rather than the fragrant paste or messy
liquid of my early years), composition notebooks with
black and white mottled covers, and to me, the essential
symbol of hope and promise: a new box of Crayola
crayons.
For BPW, now
in its 87th year in Raleigh, some things have stayed
remarkably steady and predictable, like the yellow and
green of the Crayola box. We are and will always be a
group organized for the empowerment, advocacy, and
support of working women. The way we accomplish our
mission, however, and the vocabulary we use to talk
about who we are and what we do has moved with the
times.
This month,
we will learn about key shifts in our working
environment. Who better to reflect on changing
perspectives in the Triangle than Ruth Sheehan, feature
columnist and award winning journalist for The News and
Observer (www.newsandobserver.com). Ms. Sheehan has
honed to perfection the art of putting a small frame on
one portion of a huge canvas, painting with carefully
chosen words, so that we can see an important issue in a
new way.
And who
better to illustrate the paradigm shift of how we work
than Kella Hatcher, J.D. and Maryanne Perrin, MBA,
entrepreneurs (and moms) who started a new staffing firm
called Balancing Professionals (www.balancingprofessionals.com),
which links degreed professionals with alternative work
arrangements such as flex time or job sharing for the
mutual benefit of a company’s bottom line and a working
woman’s need for balance and choice.
For a closer
look at the changing trends for Americans, look at the
national website, www.bpwusa.org, and review “101 Facts
on the Status of Workingwomen.” Then join us on
September 27 to listen, share and learn as we “Stay
Current in a Rapidly Changing World.”
Oh, and
don’t forget your No. 2 pencil. We’ll provide the
crayons!
